Story from TCPalm.com Prepzone By Laurel Pfahler
Even when the Vero Beach girls lacrosse team is not at its best, the Fighting Indians are unbeatable.
The Indians (19-0) advanced to their seventh straight Final Four with a 24-2 win over Olympia in the second round of state tournament play-in games Friday, despite being off in their passing game that typically nears flawlessness.
Vero Beach, which has won four straight on-the-field state titles and 25 consecutive playoff games, will face Winter Springs, a 19-13 winner over Ponte Vedra, in the state semifinals April 23 in Winter Garden.
“(Olympia) is a three-time district champion, and this was a regional final,” Vero Beach coach Shannon Dean said. “They are a good team. That’s just a gage of where our program is at. The final score is a product of our hard work.”
Dean chalked up the off-target and dropped passes — which came early in the first half and toward the end of the game — to adrenaline, as the Vero Beach seniors were playing their final home game.
But even with some struggles, Vero Beach had no trouble putting away the Titans. The Indians, who are ranked fifth in the nation, have outscored their Florida opponents 273-46 this season, and finding the net was never a problem Friday.
Vero Beach jumped to a 12-0 lead before the Titans got on the board in just their third attack of the game with 1:25 left in the first half. The score was 13-1 at halftime, but the Indians couldn’t hold back as they prepare for another state title.
“These games are us tuning up for the big show,” senior midfielder Krista Grabher said. “We need them to warm up for the last two games. People don’t realize how hard we work. It’s the playoffs. They made the regional final too, and we will never reach our best if we don’t play our best.”
